Every 15 March is an international Consumer Rights Day, this Year University of Rwanda hosts a celebration at the country level. Different leaders from different institutions met to talk to the rights of consumer. Mincom, ADECOR, RURA, BNR, RDF, AMIR joined with Today’s theme which stated “Trusted Smart Product”.
The university students learnt their rights as consumers from this 15th World Consumer Rights Celebration Day. Panelists talk about consumer right to safety, right to be informed, right to choose, to be heart, to education, to bearable environment.
Michel M. Sebera, Permanent secretary of Mincom assessed that Right to Consumer is a crucial issue for it enable consumers to know what he is buying where to buy it and making sure if the product has quality to market. Sebera mentioned that the fact that UR to host this event is because this University hosts about 7000 students who are future leaders and ready to consume as well as teach what they gained across the world.
Sebera came also to the role of technology which bring digital market in resolving cross border barriers as he assessed what is smart product. Smart Product is an entity designed and made for self-organized embedding into different environments, Allows for a natural product-to-human interaction and able to proactively approach the user by using sensing, input, and output capabilities of the environment.
Venerande MUKAMURERA, Director of Consumer Affairs in RURA entreated students to be helpful to the consumer who are not well organized and who are not able to stand for their rights for today there is still a gap that Service providers have not reached the level of professionalism (No service charter, value for money, customer care.
University students, Huye campus learnt a lot as future consumer and they feel ready to contribute people’s perception on consumer’s rights.
Elie Nshimiyimana , a student of law also a first winner to the competition on consumer essay dedicated to the students, said that he learnt a lot to the consumer rights and he is ready to teach what he got to the rest people.
“It was a big privilege to us students for we learnt a lot and we will be implement it in our social life.”
Principle of CBE Faustin Gasheja said that it is a big honor to the University of Rwanda not only to the student but also to the country as the students will have the impact on digital market.
World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated every year on 15 March as part of an initiative by Consumer International, a membership organization for consumer groups around the world. The day is celebrated every year, to celebrate consumer rights and build a world where everyone has access to safe and sustainable products and services.
World Consumer Rights Day was inspired by President John F Kennedy, who was the first leader in the world to address the issue of consumer rights in a special message sent to the US Congress on 15 March 1962.
