The Rwandan Women Diaspora in Germany Spearhead Economic Investment, Reconciliation, and Poverty Alleviation Efforts in Homeland’s diaspora has become a beacon of hope and progress for their homeland, uniting with a common goal of contributing to Rwanda’s economic growth, fostering reconciliation, and alleviating poverty.
Encouraged to invest in Rwanda’s economy, these women recognize the immense potential for development and prosperity. Thérèse Sekamana, a leader advocating for active participation in national development, emphasizes the importance of empowering women.
“Investing in Rwanda’s economy is not just about financial returns; it’s about investing in our nation’s future and empowering our communities,” Sekamana remarked.
With support from government representatives and diaspora affairs offices, these women have explored diverse investment opportunities spanning finance, agriculture, technology, tourism, real estate, and entrepreneurship.
Sandrine Maziyateke, overseeing Diaspora affairs, highlighted ongoing efforts to encourage Rwandan women abroad to invest in the country.
“Our embassy campaigns and Rwanda Day events aim to connect Rwandan women abroad with investment opportunities in Rwanda and facilitate their engagement in various sectors,” Maziyateke explained.
Community-Led Initiatives
Ange Bella Kabano, leader of the visiting delegation, expressed gratitude for support programs and emphasized the potential of investing in Rwanda.
“We believe that investing in Rwanda not only benefits our homeland but also provides opportunities for us to contribute to its development,” Kabano affirmed.
One notable initiative spearheaded by Rwandan women abroad is the establishment of cooperative projects, such as the ‘Igisubizo’ cooperative in Nyaruguru District. Through collaboration with local entrepreneurs and district officials, these projects aim to boost economic growth and create sustainable livelihoods.
“We saw an opportunity to empower local communities and contribute to poverty alleviation through initiatives like the Igisubizo cooperative,” explained Marie Mukangango, a representative of the Rwandan women in the German diaspora.
Despite facing challenges like disease outbreaks and logistical hurdles, the commitment of both diaspora and local leadership remains unwavering.
“We are committed to overcoming challenges and ensuring the success of projects like the Igisubizo cooperative, which are essential for driving rural development,” emphasized Emmanuel Nzamurambaho, the president of the cooperative.
Promoting Reconciliation and Heritage
Moreover, Rwandan women in the diaspora have been pivotal in promoting reconciliation efforts and preserving Rwanda’s history. Through commemorations, discussions, and engagement with government ministries, they seek to honor the past while building a brighter future.
“Our discussions with the Ministry of Unity and National Development aim to align our efforts with Rwanda’s reconciliation initiatives and contribute effectively to the country’s development,” Karekezi Yvonne, a member of the diaspora group, explained.

The impact of these collective efforts is tangible, as demonstrated by the recent donation of Rwf9 million to support small livestock farming in Nyaruguru District. Rwandan women in the German diaspora aim to drive rural development and poverty alleviation, empowering local communities and fostering sustainable growth through collaboration and solidarity.
“As Rwandan women living abroad, it is our duty to give back to our homeland and support initiatives that benefit our communities,” emphasized Marie Claire Dusabe, a beneficiary of the support.
