The National Women Team begins a second phase of preparations on Monday ahead of next month’s CECAFA Women Challenge Cup which will be staged in Kigali, Rwanda.
The tournament runs from May 11-22, 2018 and will attract teams from eight countries, namely; Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti and hosts Rwanda. Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan are yet to confirm participation.
The team held the first phase of preparations last week which attracted 40 players. Following intensive drills, Coach Kayiranga Jean Baptiste trimmed the provisional squad to 30 players.
The 30 players joined residential camp at La Palisse Hotel in Nyamata on Sunday and will begin intensive training sessions from Monday until Thursday before players are released back to their clubs.
The 30 players summoned will hold two training sessions from Monday to Thursday at at Ferwafa turf.
As hosts, Rwanda will be aiming to win the tournament but will face strong opposition from Ethiopia, defending champions Tanzania and Kenya who have had competitive women teams competing in recent continental and global qualifies.
At the 2016 edition in Uganda, She-Amavubi, then under the tutelage of Grace Nyinawumuntu, was eliminated in the group stage after defeats to Tanzania and Ethiopia.
Tanzania won the trophy after defeating Kenya in the final while Ethiopia overcame hosts Uganda to take third place.
