Securing a criminal record as required to facilitate in accessing other services has been a complicated process but Rwanda has made it possible for citizens to access it via the online government services portal- Irembo.
The criminal record certificate on Monday was launched to be offered electronically just like dozens of other services are offered through Irembo website.
According to National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA), every year at least 67,000 citizens apply for the criminal record certificate – Jean Bosco Mutangana, the NPPA Prosecutor General says this was a big number to handle.
The previous process was cumbersome requiring applicants to fill a criminal record application form online, pay fees using phone. They also had to wait for the whole three days then return the prosecution offices to pick up a criminal record document.
Under the new arrangement, the NPPA in collaboration with RwandaOnline, applicants will navigate Irembo website and follow procedures. A short message will be sent to his phone or an e-mail which they will present To Whom It May Concern.
The criminal record certificate costs Rwf1200- this has not changed and is payable through using mobile money transfer on phone.
According to Faith Keza the CEO of RwandaOnline,”candidates have to apply online for now, but we are also considering inclusive services which will take care of citizens with USSD phones.”
