Former President of the Republic of Malawi who is also currently president of many opposition party in Malawi, Professor Peter Arthur Mutharika clearly said that he will exercise his right to remain silent unless the Ant Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Malawi, told him the offence he committed.
In August 2020, the Fiscal Police questioned the Former President, under caution regarding the use of Personal Tax Identification Number (TPIN) during the time when he was the State President of Malawi. The matter related to the unauthorised use of his (TPIN) in the importation of cement by other people.
He issued a statement that clarified his position in that matter denying any involvement in the importation of that cement.
“Surprisingly, the Ant Corruption Bureau, who never questioned me in any way, froze my Bank accounts citing the alleged use or misuse of my TPIN in that transaction”. Ant Corruption Bureau continued to keep the accounts frozen for over 270 days until the institution could no longer renew the Restriction Notice that frozen the Bank accounts;” reads part of his statement. During that long period, he was not allowed to access Bank accounts even reasonable living expenses or pay bills.
Mutharika then said, he will seek legal advice on how best to respond to the questions and it is only then that I may consider responding to all or remain silent unless otherwise.
There was no immediate response from the Ant Corruption Bureau officials
