DRC is preparing to receive in its Kivu North Province the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres- the UN stabilization mission MONUSCO said Tuesday.
Guterres is scheduled to meet Ebola survivors and health workers on site.
“He will also go to an Ebola treatment center. He will also have the opportunity to meet the peacekeeping troops,” MONUSCO spokeswoman Florence Marchal said.
The UN boss will set foot on DRC soil from August 31 until September 2nd .
According to his handlers, this visit will majorly entail three dimensions;
“The first is about Ebola, the second is about peacekeeping operations and stabilization, and the third is political. During this visit, which will last three days, it will first be in the province of North Kivu,” Marchal said.
The world Health Organisation reported early last week that Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in North Kivu and Ituri provinces in the DRC has transmission intensity of 81 cases per week (range 68 to 91 cases per week) in the past six weeks.
Rwanda remained on high alert ensuring that border community is well protected and informed about how to keep safe from any such infections.
According to clinical data by WHO, when people are willing and able to access care soon after the onset of symptoms, they have an increased chance of survival.
On the political scope, the UN secretary General is expected to have a conversation on security. DRC still hosts militia groups that threaten the security and peace of Congolese, neighboruing Rwanda and Uganda.
The FDLR largely composed of members of the ousted genocidal regime are still freely roaming the jungles of the vast DRC. The ADF rebels are also a big security concern to neighbouring Uganda.
All these are squarely matters of political nature but MONUSCO has remained inactive.
