Earlier on today, the Rwanda National Police (RNP) together with Never Again Rwanda (NAR), Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), and National Commission for the fight against Genocide (CNLG) held an interaction session with the media at the Police Headquarters in Kacyiru.
This quarterly media interaction session was hold under the theme “Upholding the partnership journey through professionalism”. This also aims at updating the public on the security arrangements for the forthcoming mourning period
Presenting about information dissemination in the digital environment and the legal implications, Mugisha Emmanuel, the Executive Secretary of Rwanda Media Commission cautioned the media fraternity to always have their facts right before publishing any story
While presenting about the role of media in security and crime prevention, Dr Ryarasa Joseph Nkurunziza, Executive Director Never Again Rwanda (NAR) noted that all citizens are custodians of media, as long as they have a channel to relay their information like through Social media, TV, Radio, Online, Music, print and so on. “Collaborating with the media fraternity is vital if we are to promote peace building through their accurate and balanced reporting” he added.
During the session, the Rwanda National Police used the opportunity to call upon the public for their usual cooperation in ensuring that the upcoming commemoration of 1994 Tutsi genocide is incident free. Also, RNP reminded the general public to use use the available toll free lines to report any act aimed at genocide ideology, denial or revisionism.
Briefing the media, Dr Jean Damascene Bizimana, the Executive Secretary of National Commission for the fight against Genocide (CNLG) said that main activities of this year commemoration will take place on April 7, 2019 and April 10, 2019. This concerns all the public and private institutions. He also noted that, so far, the genocide ideology reduced by 87% basing on conducted study.
Speaking at the closing of this Police-media interaction, Mr Busingye Johnston, the Minister of Justice recognized the role of media in championing efforts of building a crime-free Rwanda. He called for a continuous media partnership in ensuring compliance with laws.
