A team of experts has convened in neighbouring Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania to discuss matters of climate change, The Express News reports.
This gathering is the 53rd edition of the Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 53). The experts are discussing under the theme, ‘Early Warning for Early Action in Support of Climate Resilience’.
A source at this forum told The Express News that participants include climate scientists, researchers, users from key socioeconomic sectors, governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), development partners, decision makers and civil society stakeholders.
This forum aims providing a regional interaction platform for decision makers, climate scientists, research scientists as well as users of climate information. Rwanda is represented by Rwanda Meteorological Agency.
This forum is also discussing the rainfall performance of March to May and June to August seasonal forecast and produce the regional consensus for September to December 2019 rainfall forecast.
Delegates are also reviewing experiences from the use of the products provided during GHACOF 52. They will follow up on the implementation of proposed mitigation measures proposed in GHACOF 52.
At this gathering, delegates will develop consensus regional climate outlook for the October to December 2019 season and also formulate mitigation strategies for key socio-economic sectors in the GHA region based on the consensus seasonal forecast.
The forum has been organised by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and partners with vested interest.
Organisers say the two-day Forum(26-28 August) will include workshops on agriculture and food security, water resources, energy, health, livestock and disaster risk management (DRM).
Before this forum there was a capacity building training workshop for climate experts from the NMHSs of the ICPAC Member States to be held at ICPAC, Nairobi, Kenya from 19 to 24 August 2019.
