There are several different versions of the story, but sources agree that an adviser to an early Rwandan king met a grisly end here, in a very unusual way.
In the C19th a man by the name Kamegeri took his suggestion to the then King of Rwanda that this rock be made a punishment place for people that break the law. They would heat the rock with fire wood till it truned red hot and then people would be put to death here.
The king was so welcoming of the idea and so he passed the suggestion into law. He ordered that the rock be heated till red hot, the king then surprised everyone by first burning Kamegeri himself first on the rock in order to get rid of a character who could suggest such a cruel fate for his fellows.
According to one authentic report of the tale, the event took place during the reign of Mwami (“King”) Yuhi IV Gahindiro, who ruled from 1746 to 1853 and had a reputation for being a fair and nonviolent ruler. Other reports have stated it was King Mibambwe Sekarongoro Mutabazi, who ruled much earlier.
The Rock of Kamegeri still stands in Ruhango district of Rwanda and you can go visit it. A place where Kamegeri was put to death by his own suggestion. Be sure to touch the rock as people say its ever hot no matter the whether.
If you want to visit this place you can ask your tour operator or travel agent to organise for you otherwise if you choose to go by yourself, you take a bus to Nyanza and like any tourist sie you will ask from here and be sure you will find . In Kinyarwanda the rock is called: Urutare rwa Kamegeri. You may choose to hire a cab for convenience.
There is a guard nearby who will be annoyed if he thinks you are taking photos of his building, so make sure you make it clear that you are simply there to see the rock (photos of the rock should be free of charge) before you start snapping!
