In the very first sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) university rankings disclosed by Times Higher Education magazine on Monday, June 26, a Rwandan college has gained the eighth slot, scoring an incredible 68.3 out of 100. The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) has also gained recognition, scoring an impressive 92.2, named as the second-highest-ranking university with maximum impact on the African continent. In the list of ranked colleges, Adventist University of Central Africa (AUCA) has secured the 71st spot. These rankings include 121 institutions that provided data for the league table and have been specifically designed by Times Higher Education to address the unique challenges faced by higher education in the SSA region, which is home to more than a billion people. The rankings consider five key pillars: resources and finance, access and fairness, teaching skills, student engagement, and Africa impact, aiming to evaluate research, teaching, and impact, which serve as the three main missions of university activities.
Ughe is a non-profit institution founded in 2015 that aims to improve healthcare delivery worldwide. The university has formed partnerships with distinguished organizations like Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Harvard Medical School, and Cummings Foundation. It offers three main educational paths including a unique dual degree program in medicine (MBBS/MGHD), a master’s degree program in global health delivery (MGHD) with several tracks such as health management, gender, sexual and reproductive health, and executive education courses for healthcare professionals to implement value-based programs successfully. Ughe has the distinction of winning three international awards since its inception and is launching new programs, including a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences and Health Equity, midwifery and nursing leadership, global surgery, community health, and other related concentrations. The Butaro academic campus, located in the Burera district, provides a suitable learning environment for undergraduate and graduate programs in non-clinical programs, medicine, nursing, and oral health. It features various facilities such as a case study room, clinical simulation center, science laboratory, and the Butaro district hospital and cancer center of excellence nearby, which provides valuable opportunities for clinical placements and practical experience for the students.
