Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo on Monday expressed gratitude for African leaders’ support in her bid to become Secretary-General of “La Francophonie”, the Association of French-speaking nations, in October this year.
Ms.Mushikiwabo attended the just-concluded 31st African Union (AU) Summit in Nouakchott, and said she was “so touched by all the support.”
Some experts on La Francophonie have said the outgoing Secretary General of ‘Francophonie’, Michaelle Jean, 60, a Haiti-born Canadian, whose term expires in mid-October could face a tough battle in her bid for re-election.
In late May this year, French President Emmanuel Macron said he supported a bid to appoint Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo as Secretary General of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). The OIF comprises 84 states and observers.
Since 2009, Ms. Mushikiwabo has been the East African country’s top diplomat. The Rwandan government has been drumming up support for her to achieve her goal.
