Police in Huye District, on Saturday, arrested a former employee of T2000, a commercial building in Nyarugenge, who allegedly stole Rwf10 million early this month and went into hiding.
Ismael Nsengimana, who was working in T2000 supermarket, stole the money on February 9.
In a theft case filed by the victims in the District Police Unit of Nyarugenge, Nsengimana allegedly went with his employers to the bank where they were supposed to deposit Rwf36 million.
The employers got other urgent plans and decided to leave Nsengimana behind to deposit the money.
However, Nsengimana deposited only Rwf26 million and fled with the Rwf10 million.
After the suspect failed to turn up to work for days, his employers became suspicious, went to the bank only to find that the money that was deposited was Rwf10 million less.
According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the police spokesperson for the Southern Province, Nsengimana was arrested in Ngoma Sector following information that he was hiding in Huye.
“At the time of his arrest, he was found with only Rwf440, 000. We also seized new clothes and a new phone valued at Rwf200, 000, and interiors from a house he was renting in Karubanda Village of Butare Cell,” he added.
“Investigators also obtained his book of records, which shows that he had already bought two motorcycles and had lent another person Rwf2 million to another person; but investigations are still underway to build a conclusive case, confiscate all he had bought as exhibit and arrest any other person that could be part of the whole theft plan,” Kayigi said.
“What was stolen has to be refunded but also the suspect has to face the law for the crime committed,” he explained.
Theft without violence or threat, under article 300 of the penal code, attracts a prison sentence of between six months and two years, and a fine of two to five times the value of what was stolen.
