Two men suspected of indulging in criminal acts were arrested separately by the Police on February 3, in Burera and Rwamagana districts.
One of the suspects, Manirakiza Theogene was arrested in Rwasa Cell, Gahunga Sector in Burera with about 40 dozens of plastic bags.
He then attempted to bribe the officer with Rwf10, 000 to try to get away with the unlawful act, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said.
Manufacture, sell or use of polythene bags is illegal and punishable under article 433 of the penal code and the fine ranges between Rwf5, 000 and Rwf3 million.
“Polythene bags are banned and not allowed in Rwanda, and that must be respected to protect the ecosystem,” he warned.
Another suspect; Valence Mbonyumukiza was apprehended in Kigabiro Sector, Rwamagana District after he attempted to bribe the officer with Rwf20000.
“Mbonyumukiza was a wanted suspect for allegedly asexually abusing an 18-year old girl, and has been in hiding. On February 3, he reached out to the officer in charge in order to drop the case, and he was immediately taken into custody,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern region police spokesperson, said.
Mbonyumukiza will be charged with both defilement and attempted bribery, Kanamugire said.
